  • Nose

As I could tell by the colour alone, not so sherried as the age-stated core range. First impression is a good balance between spirit and cask influence. Pear, orange peel, apple pie, pineapple, coconut, banana and cranberry are backed by a firm malt/cereal or even sultana base. Toffee, marzipan, caramel, brown sugar you name it, it's all there. Dark honey, vanilla, coffee, roasted pistachio, saw dust, walnut, mint oil, burnt bread, glazed ham and a little salted butter. Subtle on the sherry and similar to the Glendronach 8yo Hielan', which didn't wow me either. This is not what GlenDronach is famous for.. On its own, a decent balanced nose with lots of fruits and sweets!
  • Taste

Thin mouthfeel, again very malt driven and even less influence from the sherry casks. Harsh with lots of bitter oak and tannins upfront. Once we're past that stage, things get better with some fresh fruits as apple, banana, grapefruit, strawberry and lemon zest. Dark chocolate, creme brulee, caramel sauce, almond, vanilla, lavender, anise, wet cardboard, salt and pepper. Very clearly a youthful whisky, where the alcohol didn't get enough time to integrate on a decent level. Quite the disappointment after an okay nose, the sweet aspect gets overshadowed by tannins and alcohol heat.
  • Finish

Long. Malt, alcohol heat, apple and bitter oak.
